SharePoint is enhancing support for labels set up for user-defined permissions. There is now limited support for these labels which includes encryption configuration and user assignment abilities. Documents labelled with user-defined permissions can now be processed by SharePoint or OneDrive. This allows the document to be opened and edited in Office for the web. The label name is displayed in the Sensitivity column and the encrypted file shows in label ID searches.
Labels set up in this way are now also shown on Office for the web. However, users are currently unable to apply these labels here. If chosen, a message will inform users to apply the label using a desktop app. These contents cannot yet be examined for search, data loss prevention, or eDiscovery.
Note, if using earlier versions and co-authoring is enabled for your tenant, AutoSave and co-authoring will be temporarily turned off after users apply a sensitivity label.
This new level of support for SharePoint and OneDrive will open up more flexibility and security for document management. Users will have more control over the permissions for their documents, increasing efficiency and safety. However, there are limitations to the current form of this feature which Microsoft aims to address soon. Despite its caveats, this improved label support represents a significant step forward in enhancing user control and transparency.

SharePoint now supports limited user-defined permissions labels in preview. When a document labeled with user-defined permissions is uploaded to SharePoint or OneDrive, it can be opened and edited in Office for the web, the label name will be displayed in the Sensitivity column, and the encrypted file will be returned in search results for the label ID. Labels with this configuration can be viewed in Office for the web, but users are not able to apply them yet. However, the contents of these documents cannot be inspected for search, data loss prevention, or eDiscovery purposes. To enable AutoSave and co-authoring for these encrypted files using a desktop app, users must have enabled co-authoring for files encrypted with sensitivity labels, as well as the minimum version of Windows 16.0.16327 from the Current Channel (Preview) or 16.0.16414 from the Beta Channel, or macOS 16.51 from the Current Channel (Preview) or Beta Channel. If the minimum version is not used and co-authoring is enabled, AutoSave and co-authoring will be temporarily disabled after a user applies a sensitivity label with user-defined permissions or changes the permissions. After the user closes the document and waits 10 minutes, these features will be available again.
