Understanding Microsoft Fabric Licensing and Cost (Public Preview) Everyone has been asking and now we have some information. Adam breaks down how Microsoft Fabric Licensing and costs work. Helping you get the most out of Fabric! Announcing Microsoft Fabric capacities are available for purchase.

Microsoft Fabric, a comprehensive product for data and analytics workloads, is now available for purchase in the Azure portal. Fabric provides compute resources for various experiences, including Data Engineering, Data Science, Data Warehouse, Real-Time Analytics, and more. It does not need pre-allocation across workloads and can be shared among users and projects without restrictions.
You can access Microsoft Fabric through three paths: by leveraging an existing Power BI Premium subscription, starting a Fabric trial, or purchasing a Fabric pay-as-you-go capacity from the Azure portal.

Microsoft Fabric operates on a unified billing system, which calculates costs based on the amount of compute you provision and the amount of storage you use. Fabric capacities range from F2 – F2048, equivalent to 2 – 2048 Capacity Units (CU). Pricing varies per region; for instance, the price at US West 2 for a Fabric capacity is $0.18 per CU per hour.
OneLake, a data lake built into Microsoft Fabric, serves as a central repository for all organizational data and uses a pay-as-you-go rate similar to Azure ADLS.

Microsoft Fabric also includes a monitoring system for usage and costs. Existing Power BI Premium customers can utilize Fabric capacities as they behave similarly to Power BI Premium capacities. However, Fabric capacities cost more due to their pay-as-you-go nature, allowing dynamic scaling and pausing with no usage commitment.
Later this year, Microsoft plans to introduce an Azure Reservation commitment model for Fabric capacities, bringing their cost comparable to Power BI Premium capacities. Moreover, Microsoft plans to release a planning calculator to help estimate the right size of Fabric capacity for individual needs. The company also plans to add more capabilities, like Azure-Reservations and auto-scaling, to Fabric capacities in the coming months.
