Microsoft has declared the general availability of several capabilities in Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention (DLP). DLP, a unified, cloud-native solution, helps prevent the loss of sensitive data across applications, services, and devices. This extensible offering allows organizations to manage their Data Loss Prevention policies from a single location without incurring excessive costs. Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention controls can be extended to non-Microsoft cloud apps such as Dropbox, Box, and Google Drive. It includes a user-friendly experience for both administrators and end users.

  • Increased depth of protection: This includes capabilities that cover all types of sensitive information.

  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR) in Exchange Online and Teams: This helps the DLP engine extract text from images, recognize sensitive information such as credit card or social security numbers and prevent their sharing. OCR for SharePoint and Endpoint is currently in public preview.

  • Enhancements to fingerprinting capabilities: The support for document fingerprinting includes additional workloads such as SharePoint Online, One Drive, Teams, and Windows Endpoint.

Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention (DLP) is an integrated, cloud-native solution that helps organizations prevent the loss of sensitive data across applications, services, and devices without the need to deploy and maintain costly infrastructure or agents. This solution has protection built-in to Microsoft 365 cloud services, Office apps, Microsoft Edge (on Windows and Mac), and on endpoint devices. DLP can also be extended to Chrome and Firefox browsers through the Microsoft Purview extension and to various non-Microsoft cloud apps such as Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, and others through integration with Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps.

Today, Microsoft is excited to announce the general availability of several capabilities in Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention that help organizations increase their protection depth, extend their protection capabilities to additional planes and platforms, and empower administrators to be more efficient in their day-to-day tasks. These capabilities include Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for Exchange Online and Teams, which can extract text from images and quickly recognize if the image contains sensitive information. OCR for SharePoint and Endpoint is also available in public preview. Additionally, organizations can create fingerprint-sensitive information types and extend support for document fingerprinting to cover additional workloads such as SharePoint Online, One Drive, Teams, and Windows Endpoint.
