Power Platform: Set Up Routing

Key insights

• Environment routing: A tenant-level governance feature that sends makers into dedicated developer environments instead of the Default environment.
  It is off by default and you enable it in the admin center or with PowerShell to stop app clutter and accidental production changes.
• Personal developer environment: An automatically provisioned Dataverse workspace for each maker, similar to OneDrive for apps.
  These isolated environments reduce risk, support versioning, and keep experimentation out of shared production spaces.
• Power Platform admin center setup: Turn on Environment routing under Manage > Tenant settings, create a routing rule, name it, choose scope (Everyone or a security group), optionally pick an environment group, and save.
  Use rule priority controls when you have multiple rules so the right rule applies first.
• PowerShell basics: Sign in to your tenant, load TenantSettings, set enableDefaultEnvironmentRouting to true, set environmentRoutingAllMakers true or false, optionally set a target security group ID, then save TenantSettings.
  PowerShell supports repeatable, scriptable tenant configuration for large deployments.
• Environment group: Assign new developer environments to an environment group to inherit group policies and simplify governance.
  Choose routing for Everyone or limit it to a specific security group to control who gets auto-provisioned.
• Application Lifecycle Management (ALM): Environment routing is a foundational first step for ALM and governance, helping separate development from production and preparing teams for source control and solution-based deployments.
  It also complements managed environments, DLP policies, and maker onboarding to reduce shadow IT and scale safe low-code development.
