Key insights

  • Keyboard shortcut: Press Ctrl+5 on Windows to toggle strikethrough on and off.
On Mac use Command+Shift+X, and most web versions accept Ctrl+5 too.
  • Format Cells: Select the cell (or text inside it), right-click and choose Format Cells → Font → check Strikethrough → OK.
This method works for full cells and for selected characters inside a cell.
  • Home ribbon: Use Home → Font group → click the Strikethrough button to apply the line quickly.
If you can’t find it, add the command to the Quick Access Toolbar for faster access.
  • Conditional Formatting: Automatically strike completed items by creating a rule.
Example: Home → Conditional Formatting → New Rule → Use a formula (e.g., =A2=TRUE or =B2="Done") → Format → Font → check Strikethrough. The format updates when the condition changes.
  • Partial text formatting: Edit the cell (double-click or press F2), select the words you want, then use Format Cells → Font → check Strikethrough.
This lets you cross out only part of a cell’s content, like a single word in a sentence.
  • Remove or clear: Toggle the shortcut again or uncheck Strikethrough in Format Cells to remove the line.
Use Home → Clear → Clear Formats to remove all formatting from a cell if needed.
