Microsoft Ends Support for Skype for Business Server Connectivity
Microsoft Teams Rooms to end Skype for Business server support from October 1, 2023; transition to Microsoft Teams advised.
Skype for Business server, a legacy technology, will no longer be supported in Microsoft Teams Rooms for on-premises customers. The Skype for Business online service had been retired in 2021. It's announced that the support for Skype for Business server connections will end on October 1, 2023. The Teams Rooms for Windows' meeting mode options, 'Skype for Business only', 'Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams (default)' and 'Skype for Business (default) and Microsoft Teams' will be unavailable post this change. All Skype for Business related settings will also be removed from device settings and setup experience.
Earlier variants of Teams Rooms for Windows app also allowed for Skype for Business Server support. However, this feature will no longer be available. The earlier versions also offered an 'opt-out' option for the new experience which will be discarded as well. The Microsoft Teams online service has extended features of Skype for Business, bringing a modernized, intelligent, and collaborative platform. Migration to Microsoft Teams has been strongly recommended.
- Teams Rooms support will align to Teams Desktop for Exchange server setup post the deprecation of support for Skype for Business servers.
- The Skype for Business Online service will remain fully functional till July 31, 2021.

- Microsoft may assist organizations using Skype for Business Online with their upgrade to Teams prior to the July 31, 2021 retirement of the service.
- Notifications regarding assisted upgrades will be sent to customers through Teams admin center and Microsoft 365 Message Center three months prior to the stipulated upgrade date.
