As we’re all aware, the default (Power Platform) environment in any Azure tenant is a very ‘interesting’ thing to have.

The default environment in the Power Platform is automatically added when an Azure tenant is established, giving all users within this tenant access. However, we can not restrict users from the default environment. Although it is permitted to back it up, it cannot be restored over itself, and there is no SLA or support available for it.

  • The default environment is present by default when an Azure tenant is created.

  • All users within the Azure tenant automatically have access to the default environment.

  • We are not able to restrict users from being in the default environment.

  • Although backing up the environment is possible, it cannot be restored over itself.

  • There's no SLA/support available in the default environment.

  • The default environment is often the source of issues for users unaware of its idiosyncrasies.

  • Despite its challenges, the default environment is usually the first place new Power Platform users land and start building applications and automations.

Further Discussion on Default Environments

The challenges and restrictions surrounding the default environment in Power Platform leads to numerous problems, especially for newcomers. Despite the difficulties, the default environment is the preliminary landing ground for new users, where they instinctively commence building applications and automations. While it's troublesome that it can't be restored over itself and there is no SLA/support available, it is nevertheless a common starting point for users, which makes it significant to understand and manage effectively.

Learn about Default Environment – How to handle?

The default environment in Azure tenants is an interesting one that can cause many headaches for users and administrators. It is accessible to all users in the Azure tenant by default and cannot be restricted, making it difficult to manage. Furthermore, it cannot be backed up and restored over itself, and there is no SLA or support available for it. This can lead to issues arising from people using the default environment without being aware of the challenges involved. Despite this, it is the first place new users of the Power Platform will land, so it is important to have the right tools and processes in place to manage it.

Some tips on how to handle the default environment include: setting up processes and guidelines for users on how to use the environment correctly; establishing a governance model for the environment; creating a backup and restore policy; and setting up systems to monitor and audit usage. Additionally, it may be beneficial to consider creating a separate environment for users to work in, that can be backed up and restored more easily.
