Copilot Cowork GA: Whats Changed?

Key insights

• Copilot Cowork reached general availability on June 16, 2026 and shifts Microsoft 365 Copilot from chat to an agentic layer that can carry out multi-step tasks (send emails, schedule, create documents) with human approval checkpoints.

• Usage-based billing now charges Cowork by Copilot Credits, with each task priced from model use, context retrieval, tool calls, and runtime; tenants with Frontier use between Mar 30–Jun 16 get a grace period until July 1, 2026.

• Admin cost controls are built in: Cowork is off by default and admins can set spending limits, allocate budgets, apply tenant/group/user restrictions, enable usage alerts, and require user credit requests to prevent surprises.

• Extensibility includes reusable skills, partner plugins, and support for Dynamics 365; Microsoft also added model choice and uses Anthropic Claude for much of reasoning and Imagen 2 for image generation where applicable.

• Security and compliance are core GA claims: Cowork actions, prompts, and artifacts flow through existing Microsoft 365 controls and inherit sensitivity labels; GA includes audit logs, eDiscovery, Insider Risk Management, and Data Lifecycle Management, while Cowork cannot access local encrypted files or delete OneDrive/SharePoint items without permission.

• When to choose Cowork: pick Cowork for metered, approval-driven automation and complex multi-step workflows; use standard Microsoft 365 Copilot for conversational help and simpler tasks to keep costs and risk lower.
