Data model in the Power BI Service

Microsoft is introducing data model editing capabilities in Power BI Service, which were previously exclusive to Power BI Desktop. Users can now modify existing data models on the web, including editing relationships, creating DAX measures, and managing row-level security (RLS). The goal is to eventually achieve parity in modeling capabilities between Power BI Service and Power BI Desktop.

Setup Instructions:

This feature is automatically enabled for datasets stored in My Workspace. To use it in a collaborative workspace, turn on the Workspace level preview switch under workspace settings. Users can enter the data model editing experience through various entry points such as the dataset details page or report editing mode.

  • Creating and editing measures, calculated columns, and calculated tables.
  • Creating and editing relationships.
  • Defining row-level security roles and rules.
  • Editing properties for data fields.
  • Creating new reports based on the data model.

Behavior to Note:

  • Changes to the data model will be automatically saved and are permanent with no option to undo.
  • Users must have write and build dataset permissions to open and edit the corresponding data model in the service.

Data Model Editing Administration:

  • Power BI administrators can enable or disable data model editing for the organization or specific security groups via the Power BI admin portal.
  • Power BI administrators can audit operations related to editing data models in the web from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
  • Users can monitor the impact of editing data models on their Power BI Premium capacities using the Premium metrics app.

Limitations and Known Issues:

A full list of limitations, including unsupported datasets, layout persistence across sessions, and functional and accessibility gaps, can be found in the documentation.

Power BI Service vs Power BI Desktop

Power BI Service and Power BI Desktop serve different purposes within the Power BI ecosystem and are designed to complement each other. It is unlikely that Power BI Service will replace Power BI Desktop, as they target different aspects of the data analysis and visualization process.

Power BI Desktop is primarily a data modeling and report design tool, designed for creating interactive reports and visualizations. It offers a rich set of features for data transformation, data modeling, and visual design. Users typically use Power BI Desktop to connect to data sources, clean and prepare the data, create visualizations, and design interactive reports.

On the other hand, Power BI Service is a cloud-based platform for sharing, collaborating, and distributing reports created in Power BI Desktop. It allows users to securely share reports and dashboards with others in their organization, schedule data refreshes, and access the reports from various devices, including mobile phones and tablets. Power BI Service also offers some report editing and data exploration capabilities, but it is not as feature-rich as Power BI Desktop for these tasks.

In summary, Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service are designed to work together, with each tool focusing on specific tasks in the data analysis and visualization workflow. It is unlikely that Power BI Service will replace Power BI Desktop, as they serve different purposes and complement each other’s functionalities.

What is Power BI Desktop

Power BI Desktop is a free, powerful data visualization and reporting tool developed by Microsoft. It is designed to help users create interactive reports and visualizations for sharing insights and making data-driven decisions. Power BI Desktop is a part of the larger Power BI ecosystem, which also includes Power BI Service (a cloud-based platform) and Power BI Mobile (a mobile app for iOS and Android devices).

With Power BI Desktop, users can connect to various data sources (such as Excel, SQL Server, and other databases), transform and clean the data, and create visually appealing reports using drag-and-drop functionality. The tool offers a wide range of visualization options, including bar charts, pie charts, maps, and more. These visualizations can be customized and organized into interactive dashboards that help users explore and analyze data effectively.

Once a report is created in Power BI Desktop, it can be published to the Power BI Service for easy sharing with other users within an organization. This enables collaboration, secure access control, and the ability to view reports on various devices, including mobile phones and tablets.
