Copilot Cowork Costs: Real Examples

Key insights

• Copilot Cowork is an agentic Copilot designed for complex, long-running, multi-tool tasks rather than simple chat or in-app help.
Use Cowork when you need model reasoning, retrieved context, tool calls, or workflows that run across many steps.
• Pricing model combines a base subscription plus usage charges: you must have the Microsoft 365 Copilot User Subscription License (USL), and Cowork runs are billed separately in Copilot Credits.
This means organizations budget both the seat license and the consumption of credits.
• How credits are calculated — Microsoft measures each task by four inputs: model use, context retrieval, tool calls, and runtime.
Tasks that use more context, call more tools, or run longer will consume more credits.
• Pricing options include pay-as-you-go at about $0.01 per Copilot Credit and volume prepay plans (commonly called P3 prepaid) that offer discounts for committed usage.
Choose pay-as-you-go for flexible experiments and prepaid for predictable high-volume needs.
• Typical cost bands for single tasks: Light ~100–300 credits (~$1–$3), Medium ~400–700 credits (~$4–$7), and Heavy 700+ credits (~$7+).
Examples: a weekly status report can be light, multi-step workshop design tends to be medium or heavy depending on runtime and iterations.
• Budgeting and rollout tips — use the cost estimator, set spending limits, and track how iteration increases cost.
Evaluate Cowork for tasks that clearly need multi-step automation or advanced reasoning; use standard Copilot for simple content or quick answers to control spend.
