In this video, Allison goes into Power Query in Excel and in Power BI and shows how you can combine two data sources with the same row structure by doing a Merge. She walks through choosing the correct Join for your data, what you should keep in mind, and shows how to do the Merge process.

She also covers the difference between a Merge and a Merge as New. For this episode in the Power Query Series, we start with Power Query in Power BI and then show the steps are results in Power Query in Excel at the end.

What is Power Query?

Power Query is a data transformation and manipulation tool that is available as part of Microsoft Excel and the Power BI suite of business analytics tools. It allows users to discover, connect to, and shape data from a wide variety of sources, including databases, text files, and web services.

Power Query provides a graphical interface for creating and modifying data queries, making it easy for users to extract, transform, and load data without having to write complex code. It also includes a range of built-in functions and transformations that can be used to manipulate data, such as merging and merging tables, applying filters and aggregations, and splitting and combining columns.

Power Query is particularly useful for data analysts and business intelligence professionals who need to quickly and easily extract and transform data from multiple sources for analysis and visualization. It can be used to connect to and shape data from a variety of sources, including Excel spreadsheets, CSV files, and databases, and can be used to create custom queries and data transformations that can be saved and reused.

Power Query has over 600 native functions and the Power Query team keeps adding more and more.

I wouldn’t recommend memorizing them, but you do need to understand the concept of parameters and arguments in order to understand what functions are.
