Excel is an incredibly powerful tool for analyzing data, and the five number summary is one way to quickly gain insight into a dataset. The five number summary is a set of five statistical values that provide a general overview of a data set: minimum, first quartile (Q1), median, third quartile (Q3), and maximum. To calculate the five number summary in Excel, you must first organize your data into a spreadsheet. Then, apply the MIN, QUARTILE.EXC, MEDIAN, QUARTILE.INC, and MAX functions to calculate each of the five values. The MIN function returns the smallest value in the dataset, the QUARTILE.EXC function returns the first quartile (Q1) value, the MEDIAN function returns the median value, the QUARTILE.INC function returns the third quartile (Q3) value, and the MAX function returns the largest value in the dataset.
