Discover the latest Dynamics 365 Business Central tool for data analysis - analyze, group & pivot data on list pages with ease!

Introduction

Microsoft's flagship business solution, Dynamics 365 Business Central, introduces a new analyze view mode in list pages for its 2023 Wave (v22) release. This innovative feature allows end-users and data analysts to explore, group, and pivot data from list pages directly in the browser, negating the necessity of opening the page in Excel or running a report.

This new feature, called analysis mode, redefines the way data interaction is done on list pages. You can easily add multiple tabs representing various tasks or views on the data in contrast to running reports using different filters and options. Moreover, it is quite simple to switch to this analysis mode from a list page.

Find out how this works in the following sections.

Operationality of Analysis Mode

Imagine that one has the task of analysing future sales volume. For this, they want sales order details with the sales amount for pending shipment orders, broken down by customer and year/month. For this, all you have to do is go to the Sales Orders list page and activate Analyze.

In Analysis mode, the data opens in a new experience that’s optimized for data analysis. Pages in analysis mode are divided into two sectors: the primary data area and the field modifier area. Use the data area to interact with the data, and the field modifier area for controlling the data format and what data to present.

When the page is in Analysis View mode, you can now move on to modify column arrangements and toggle on Pivot mode. Add the necessary fields to the Row Groups area and the Values area. You can now easily analyze your data directly in the browser. You can also recreate the analysis to conduct other analytical studies starting from a previously established point.

Enabling Analysis Mode

The new analysis mode is now publicly available. However, your system administrator must activate it before you use it. To enable it, just go to the Feature Management page and toggle on Analysis Mode.

Important Note

Please note that switching to analysis mode will load all data into your browser, and as of this post's writing, there's a limit on the number of rows returned to the browser. Therefore, applying appropriate filters becomes important.

Further Examination On Dynamics 365

The newly introduced analysis mode on Dynamics 365 continues to highlight the platform's commitment to providing data-driven solutions to businesses. The operative simplicity coupled with data versatility holds the mode in good stead. Offering users the ability to analyze their sales data from the browser without additional software blurs application borders and opens a new wave of possibilities.

Through the list pages function and the ability to apply a variety of filters and modules, Dynamics 365 caters to different analysis needs. From sales evaluation, product popularity, or predicting future trends, the Analysis mode enables a comprehensive review of data without leaving the platform.

Overall, the introduction of analysis mode, coupling operational simplicity with versatility, is yet another instance of the Dynamics 365 platform's investment into analytical capacity and user-friendly operations.

Learn about Dynamics 365 Business Central: Analyze, group, and pivot data on list pages using multiple tabs

Microsoft's popular business solution, Dynamics 365 Business Central, has enhanced its features in its 2023 Wave release (v22). One of the latest additions is the new 'Analyze' view mode on list pages—a convenient tool geared to provide insightful data analysis. The feature enables end users and data analysts to effectively and efficiently interact with their data directly from the list pages in the client, forgoing the need to export the data into Excel or another software to generate a report.

With this new feature, users have a more streamlined and intuitive interaction with their data on the list pages. The traditional way of navigating through data with multiple filters or options and running separate reports can be improved. By simply creating different 'tabs', representing a variety of tasks or views for the data, the platform does the rest. Once the filter pane is applied to the data, the user simply switches to the analysis mode, rendering the analytical data ready to use.

As with any analytical tool, the accurate depiction of the data is crucial. Let's illustrate this feature with an example where a user wants to analyze expected sales volumes or order details for unshipped orders. This data can be broken down to a range of categories such as customer name, customer number, order number, year and month. The process begins by initiating the 'Sales Orders' list page and switching on the 'Analyze' command.

When switched on, analysis mode presents a new user interface that is optimized for data evaluation. When in analysis mode, the page is bifurcated into two main areas:

  • The Data Area: Here the user interacts with the data. For columns that are summable, descriptive statistics for a set of fields can be obtained by selecting them.
  • The Field Modifier Area: Here, the users control the data's appearance and formatting. A menu aids in selecting the fields to be shown or hidden.

To further enhance the operation, the 'Columns' menu feature helps the user to choose the relevant columns for the analytical data. The 'Pivot' mode further allows the users to organize their data to provide a more meaningful analysis. This is done by dragging the required fields into the 'Row Groups' area in a defined sequence.

The Microsoft business management solution then illuminates the presented data. The user can then peruse the data and complete the analysis—all within the confines of the browser. The browser-based operation simplifies the task as the user can easily duplicate the analysis. Each of these analytical data views can use different aspects of the business such as the 'Amount Including VAT' field. Analysis filters found in the tabs, aid in further refining the data views.

Although the analysis mode is a component of the feature-laden range from Microsoft, it is important to note that this feature might load extensive data onto the user's browser. The large amount of data traffic might occasion some limitations—for instance, there could be a limitation on the number of rows (currently above 100,000 rows) returned to the browser. Hence, the right application of filters is crucial during analysis.

The 'Analysis View' feature is currently in public preview, therefore, the users must first activate it before they can use it. The activation process is fairly straightforward where the user must go to the Feature Management page and enable the 'Analysis Mode'.

Ultimately, the analytical data generated directly form the Dynamics 365 Business Central list pages allows users to make informed decisions rooted in data directly from their workspace. The dynamics of business operations can metamorphose with such a wholesome integration.
