Azure Standard Service Endpoints deep dive: Network Identifier, NSP, RBAC, Private Link access and scalability tips

Key insights

  • Standard Service Endpoint: A newer Azure feature that identifies VNet traffic to PaaS resources using a public IP instead of subnet-only rules. It aims to simplify secure VNet-to-PaaS connections and reduce configuration complexity.
  • Network Identifier (NID): The NID is a public IP you attach to service endpoints on subnets to mark traffic. You can reuse the same public IP across multiple subnets and VNets to cut ACL entries, but avoid mixing those public IPs with regular service IPs to prevent routing confusion.
  • Network Security Perimeter (NSP): NSPs secure the target PaaS resource by authorizing inbound traffic that matches the NID. Configure IP-based inbound rules inside the NSP to allow only identified traffic to reach the service.
  • Configuration steps: Create a public IP, set it as the NID on subnet service endpoints, secure the PaaS resource with an NSP, and add matching inbound rules. You need the Network Contributor role or equivalent permission to join a public IP to a service endpoint NID.
  • Scale and supported services: The model reduces ACL growth and works better at large scale than classic endpoints. Support is service-specific; Azure SQL Database is listed for public preview now, and service endpoint policy support is available for some scenarios.
  • Preview status and pricing: The feature is in public preview, has no SLA, and is not recommended for production. It was free in July 2026 with billing expected after preview (targeted around August 2026). Availability varies by cloud and region.
