Microsoft Loop: A Quick Guide

Microsoft Loop is a Microsoft 365 app that provides interactive elements for collaboration on lists, tables, or notes. It allows these components to be shared across different Microsoft 365 apps.

What is Microsoft Loop?

Microsoft Loop aims to improve collaboration in Microsoft 365. Despite existing collaboration tools, users still tend to use Outlook or Teams for daily communication. Microsoft Loop addresses this by enabling creation of interactive components that can be shared and updated in real time using various Microsoft 365 apps.

Loop Elements

Loop is made up of three elements: Loop Components, Loop Pages, and Loop Workspaces. 

Loop Components are available in Teams, Whiteboard, and Outlook. They are stored in the author's OneDrive account as .fluid files (to be changed to .loop later).

Loop Pages act like more powerful OneNote pages. These pages provide a flexible workspace for organizing ideas, files, and data in real-time.

Loop Workspaces serve as spaces for team projects. They allow you to organize all your project files, content, and ideas.

Using Microsoft Loop

The Microsoft Loop app and Loop Pages are currently in public preview. Loop components can already be used in Outlook, Teams, Word Online, and Whiteboard. 

Adding Loop Components in Teams

Loop components can be added in Teams Chats. They can be created by clicking on the Loop icon, selecting the desired component, and clicking on 'Send' to allow other participants to edit the component in real time.

Adding Loop Components in Outlook

Loop components can be added in new emails in Outlook. Once added to an email and sent, participants can view and edit the component without needing to reply to the email.

Microsoft Whiteboard

Microsoft Whiteboard supports Loop components. At the moment, Loop components cannot be created in Whiteboard but can be copied and pasted from other apps.

Loop App

The Loop App is a collection of pages where you can add notes, ideas, images, and Loop components. Pages can be grouped together for different projects or categories.

Enabling/Disabling Microsoft Loop

Microsoft Loop is enabled by default for all tenants, but can be disabled using PowerShell. You'll need to connect to SharePoint Online to check if Loop is enabled and to enable/disable it.

Wrapping Up

Microsoft Loop aims to improve collaboration in Microsoft 365. Its main advantage is that it can be used across different Microsoft 365 apps, particularly within Teams. With the expected release of Loop Workspace and Pages, it will be interesting to see how it impacts the role of OneNote within Microsoft 365.
