Copilot Unlocks Power Query for Everyone

Key insights

• Copilot in Excel extends to Power Query workflows and lets users describe import tasks in plain language.
Copilot then builds a Power Query connection and presents the query for review and execution.
• Power Query (Get & Transform) is Excel’s data-import and transformation tool that connects to external sources, applies repeatable steps, and loads results into worksheets or the data model.
It replaces fragile copy-paste workflows with managed, refreshable imports.
• Natural-language query generation enables Copilot to find files in OneDrive or SharePoint, import tables from other workbooks, and generate the matching Power Query steps automatically.
The feature can show the resulting query and supports more sources as Microsoft expands the experience.
• Refreshable connections let Copilot create queries that update when the original source changes, not just one-time copies.
This makes data pipelines repeatable and reduces manual upkeep.
• Generated M code visibility gives users the exact Power Query steps and M code Copilot creates so they can inspect, edit, and validate transformations.
This improves trust and helps users learn query logic.
• Typical workflow: open Excel with Copilot, describe the import, confirm the source, review the query and M code, load the data, and refresh as needed.
Always review generated steps before using them in production workbooks.
