PowerPoint Copilot: Build Custom Skills

Key insights

• Custom skills are reusable instruction sets that let Copilot for PowerPoint apply organization-specific behavior to create or edit slides faster.
They bring specialized AI workflows—like briefings, pitches, and compliance checks—directly into presentations.
• Create custom skills from the Copilot pane: go to Settings → Manage skills → Custom skills → Create OneDrive folder, then Open skills folder and add your files.
This OneDrive folder is the canonical, supported path for storing skills.
• A typical skill lives in a named folder inside the OneDrive skills folder and uses a SKILL.md file with a short description and step-by-step instructions.
Name the folder to match the skill’s declared name so Copilot can find and list it.
• Microsoft and community reports note a newer in-pane flow: Choose skills > Manage skills > Add skill lets you add a skill directly from the Copilot UI.
This add-skill experience began rolling out in mid‑2026 and may not appear in every tenant yet.
• Prerequisites and management: you must have Copilot in PowerPoint, and skills are managed from the Copilot pane rather than the ribbon.
If a new skill does not appear, use the Refresh control in Manage skills or recheck the OneDrive folder.
• Key benefits: Reusable guidance, organization-specific behavior, and centralized management in OneDrive make workflows consistent and faster.
Follow Microsoft’s official article for the standard OneDrive method while the in-pane add flow continues to roll out.
