Recently, I went back to the world of SharePoint online to do a bit of work with a modern employee engagement platform. It’s been a while since I last worked with communications sites and that side of SharePoint, so I noticed a thing or two.

In this post, we’re going to look at some hub site functionality that lets you create multiple layers in your hub sites, and where one hub site or ‘hub’ can be a parent hub of another child hub or hub site. Let’s take a look!

Parent and Child Hub Sites in SharePoint Online are a way of organizing content within an organization. They allow you to connect sites that have similar purposes, so they can be managed as one entity. This means all the connected sites will inherit navigation, branding, search and other features from the parent hub site, which makes it easier for users to find what they're looking for. By using Parent and Child Hub Sites in SharePoint Online organizations can create a unified digital workspace that is tailored to their specific needs.

Associate a hub to another hub Select the hub site that you'd like to make an association to, then select Hub settings in the command bar to open to hub settings panel. Next, select a hub to associate to in the Parent hub association field. Hubs that are available for association will appear here.

An organization can have up to 2,000 hub sites. You might not need a hub site for every function and it's important to do some planning before you create hubs.

A hub is used organize sites with a shared theming, navigation, search and news roll ups. A home site serves as the top level portal with unique functionality like special SP mobile treatment, organizational news, tenant wide search, integration with SP start page, etc.
