Windows 11’s modern File Explorer UI and RGB lighting controls head to testers. A screenshot of the File Explorer inside Windows 11 with a new modern UI shows the new File Explorer home UI has a carousel for recent files. Microsoft has started testing its new modern File Explorer UI for Windows 11 alongside built-in RGB lighting controls. The updated File Explorer UI includes a modern home interface with large file thumbnails and a carousel interface that can surface recent files and favorited ones.
The subtle changes to the File Explorer UI here make it blend more closely to the overall Windows 11 design language, with a refreshed address bar and search box. “The new address bar intelligently recognizes local vs. cloud folders with built-in status,” says Brandon LeBlanc.
The modern File Explorer UI in Windows 11 is a major improvement over its predecessors, offering users a sleek and intuitive design to manage their files. As a part of Windows 11's overall design language, the updated File Explorer features built-in RGB lighting controls and an intelligent address bar that distinguishes between local and cloud folders, making file management simpler and more efficient for users. With improvements such as a carousel interface for easy access to recent and favorited files, Windows 11's File Explorer aims to enhance the user experience significantly.
Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23475 to the Dev Channel, which brings several new features to Windows Insiders. These include a modernized File Explorer Home and address bar powered by Windows App SDK and WinUI. The new File Explorer will display recommended files for users who are signed into Windows with an Azure Active Directory (AAD) account in a carousel format, which will soon support file thumbnails. For OneDrive users, the address bar will now contain the OneDrive sync status and quota flyout.
The build also introduces Dynamic Lighting, offering users and developers native control of Lighting Devices implementing the open HID LampArray standard. Several device manufacturers, such as Acer, ASUS, HP, HyperX, Logitech, Razer, and Twinkly, have partnered with Microsoft on Dynamic Lighting.
The new build also supports Emoji 15 and comes with a few known issues. Feedback can be provided in the Feedback Hub under Files, Folders, and Online Storage > File Explorer. A new Microsoft Store update is also part of the release.
