Microsoft is set to roll out 3D avatars for all Microsoft Teams users starting in May, according to an update on the Microsoft 365 roadmap. The avatars feature was announced in 2021 and has been tested privately in recent months.
The avatars are designed to allow people to avoid appearing on camera during meetings and will animate based on vocal cues alone. Microsoft is also planning to use the avatars in immersive 3D meetings that it has partnered with Meta to roll out to VR headsets. A Teams client for Meta Quest headsets will allow people to hold meetings in VR with 3D avatars featuring floating emoji and animations such as the ability to raise hands.
