SharePoint Online’s New Block Download Policy
Block Download Policy for SharePoint PowerShell is used for management and is licensed by Syntex Advanced Management One
“As a SharePoint Administrator or Global Administrator in Microsoft 365, you can block download of files from SharePoint sites or OneDrive. This feature does not need Azure Active Directory conditional access policies. This feature can be set for individual sites and cannot be set at the organization level.”
One of the aspects that the new Syntex Advanced Management license covers is the restriction of file downloads from a SharePoint Online site or OneDrive for Business account. This feature is designed to provide enhanced protection for sites that contain highly confidential data by requiring users to access and work with files using their web browser. Even the use of Office desktop applications is prohibited since they download a temporary copy of files to a local device.
At present, the block download feature is still in its preview phase. To activate this policy for a site, you must use the Set-SPOSite cmdlet from the latest version of the SharePoint Online management PowerShell module.
