Starting May 8, 2023, Microsoft services will begin enforcing number matching for all users of Microsoft Authenticator push notifications. These attacks rely on users approving simple voice, SMS, or push notifications without context. Microsoft Authenticator is a widely used MFA method and offers multiple ways to protect users from MFA fatigue attacks&#58;</p><ol><li>Number matching prevents accidental approval by requiring users to type a two-digit code from the login screen to their Authenticator app.</li><li>Additional context provides users with more information in push notifications, such as location and app they’re accessing, to help them make informed decisions.</li><li>For users still migrating to Authenticator, automate password changes for at-risk users to protect them from potential attacks.</li></ol><p><br></p><p>Enabling these features can significantly reduce the chances of MFA fatigue attacks. It helps to counter Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) fatigue attacks that rely on push notification spam. MFA fatigue attacks occur when a threat actor spams the victim with MFA push notifications. It’s a social engineering tactic that is used to gain unauthorized access to a corporate network.</p><p><br></p><p>With this release, Microsoft will enable the number matching feature for all supported cloud services. Users will also see additional context (such as the app’s name and the login location) to prevent accidental approvals.</p><p><br></p><p>“Number matching is a key security upgrade to traditional second factor notifications in Microsoft Authenticator.
